The Need for Mentorship

In our community:

1 in 3 8th-11th graders don’t feel that adults in their community care about them at least “some” (a little or not at all)

1 in 4 8th graders and 1 in 5 9th and 11th graders do not know what programs are available in their community.

(Minnesota Student Survey – 2016 Olmsted County 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 4,315 students)

Programs in the Rochester area are making a difference, but:

  • Y mentors – 60% of mentees unmatched
  • Alternative Learning Center (ALC) – The youth at ALC, who are already identified as being at-risk, often feel as if everyone else has given up on them.
  • Bolder Options – can take 3 months (in some cases over a year) to match a mentee with a mentor.  Huge need for 25-40 years of age for mentors

What are we trying to accomplish?

Our main goal is to bridge the gap between the number of mentors and mentees by

  • Informing the community of mentorship need
  • Aligning mentors with youth organizations through a web-based application.
  • Activating our workforce to invest in the future

How can you help?

  • Become a mentor or volunteer
  • Donate to the cause
  • Spread the word and create awareness
  • Share your success stories
