The Need for Mentorship
In our community:
1 in 3 8th-11th graders don’t feel that adults in their community care about them at least “some” (a little or not at all)
1 in 4 8th graders and 1 in 5 9th and 11th graders do not know what programs are available in their community.
(Minnesota Student Survey – 2016 Olmsted County 5th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 4,315 students)
Programs in the Rochester area are making a difference, but:
- Y mentors – 60% of mentees unmatched
- Alternative Learning Center (ALC) – The youth at ALC, who are already identified as being at-risk, often feel as if everyone else has given up on them.
- Bolder Options – can take 3 months (in some cases over a year) to match a mentee with a mentor. Huge need for 25-40 years of age for mentors
